Acai Benefits: The Pros and Cons

With all of the attention recently being paid to the acai berry, researchers and health-food professionals alike have become very excited at its benefits, and it has become difficult to find the truth of the studies that have been performed amidst all of the hype.
We can be safe in the knowledge that the acai berry does actually contain a lot of antioxidants, because the deep purple colour of the fruit shows us that it is especially high in anthocyanins. These cause much of the cleansing and immune system boosting properties that are considered to be primary acai benefits. Additionally, these anthocyanins are what are responsible for much of the cardiovascular and cholesterol regulating properties of the acai berry. Not only that, but anthocyanins that are found in other fruits, though usually in lesser amounts, have been shown to have similar effects to those claimed of the acai berry, and so consumers can feel safe in the knowledge that this, at least, is a definite benefit of the fruit.
The primary con of the fruit, however, having no natural side effects and showing no known detriment to a person’s health, is found in the hype surrounding it. Having been discovered to have an effect on a person’s metabolism and overall ability to lose weight, many people have begun to consider it a dietary aide. This wouldn’t normally cause a problem, except that many dietary companies have taken this knowledge, with a rousing endorsement from tons of celebrities to back them up, and used it to market the acai berry as a be-all-and-end-all diet supplement. Though the acai berry does have weight management properties, as well as metabolism boosters, as with all weight loss diets healthy eating and regular exercise are necessary components.
